Working on Assignment #2 - making clarity (part2)

I have decided that the action of drinking will also not have a main character. The Scene will be set, but the sound of drinking will be all that it is bearable.

Working on Assignment n2

I found some useful examples of Haikus on this website: http://www.toyomasu.com/haiku/#akutagawa

Working on Assignment n2

Create 5, 15-second video haikus with sound, non-linear editing, titles, and in color.
No non-diegetic sound allowed.
26 day project completion cycle.

I started observing what happens in 15 seconds. Many things that involve water seem to happen in that amount of time. For example, pooring water in a glass, putting a tea bag in hot water, going to the toilet, drinking.

Now I am looking at Haikus to get an exact understanding of them.

Assignment 1

I went back to filming the day before the assignment was due and I had a moment of clarity in which I understood how to move the attention in the movie. It went back to my original idea rather than get lost in looking like a smoking add.

I still feel like I cannot quite understand the quality of the videos I produce. Therefore I am firm into watching as many movies as I can to educate myself in this field.

working on Assignment n1 - scared

Well - Well
I filmed yesterday all day and will try out some other things tommorow.
It does not look how I imagined it, and I am trying to accept that rather then getting angree or feeling confused about it.
problem - my apartment's hot water lasts for one shoot at the time, which makes it so that I have to heat up water in pans and run to the bathroom and get the steam going.
I also feel that the attention is too strong on the smoke coming out of her lips rather than on the steam. Lets see what happens on monday!
I might try to find a smoke machine...

Working on Assignment n#1 - changing idea

After thinking and having long coversations over a glass of wine with my roomates, I decided to dive into the mirror idea and give up the Kaleidoscope effect/plot video. Satisfied of having proof to myself that I can decide to want to build something and than doing it, I realized that it seemes to me more 'experimental' to work with the time that it takes for a mirror to fog up.

This is what I will do:
-Camera will be fixed on one angle in the bathroom. The shoot will include the mirror, and some details of the betroom. I will use a grand-angle to increase the range of the shot.
-I will record the mirror and the camera lense fogging up, while my character stands infront of the mirror. All it will be visible of the character is the reflected image and part of the shoulder and head.
-Once I will have that I will projected and rewind it at a very slow speed so that the mirror will actually de fog, leaving us with the image of a lady infront of the mirror.
-To end the video, the lady will open her mouth and smoke will slowly come out.

There is one other elements that I want to try out, but I am not sure I will include. One is to have a drawing slowly appear on the side of the phrame like a "etch-a-sketch" effect. I would do this effect having a clear sheet of paper that I put between the projection and the camera. And I will just try to use a stop-motion effect to make it increase slowly. All this will be in the right side of the screen, while the lady is on the left hand side.

Poetic/Concept: I think this video would be concern with the idea of time passing. Both the smoke/fog and the drawing progress slowly. A simple action that happens in 90 seconds.

I am still working on the reason why having smoke in her mouth. All I can think now it is because she is breathing her surroundings, so once she gets rid of the fog surrounding her, she has to get rid of the fog that is inside her. All is functional to reach a clarity.

Working on Assignment n#1 - Poetic

After creating my Kaleidoscope I realized I had to find a reason to use that effect. Especially after seeing Fernand Léger's (1881-1955) Ballet Mechanique, I realized that I needed to be really carefull on the use that I would of made of that effect. Therefore I started thinking of what use I could have for that in what 90 seconds video.
I realized that I would like to work with a plot, but make the viewers fullfill the connections. I was inpired from what we saw David Lynch do with the Lumiere's camera, in his short video . I decided I will try to create a plot, than deconstruct it to a few specific scenes. Each scene will be carefully connected to the others with a black out.

[I am still not fully convinced of this idea I might try something with filming steam fill up a bathroom, and waiting for the mirrow and the camera lens to fog up. I am thinking that I should try to do something more complecated, and challenging for me.]

Working on Assignment n#1 - Kaleidoscope

Assignment 1, Light & Shadow - create a 90 second, in-camera edited, silent B/W experimental study of "light and shadow." Must feature an experimental optical in-camera effect such as camera obscura, heat distortion, split-screen using mirrors, glass mattes, etc. 12 day project completion cycle.

-To work on this assignment I started searching the web for home made special effects and visual effects (http://www.illuweb.it/). That also brought me into looking at web-sites that talked about physics and light theory.

-Soon I started thinking about Kaleidoscopes especially does that reflect the images they get from the outside. I started getting intrigued with the possibility of creating one and finding a way to attach it to the camera. I found a series of great web sites that explained how to make a Kaleidoscope.
-http://baublesbynancy.com/kaleidoscope.htm
-http://www.kaleidoscopestoyou.com/crtured.html

I also found a web site with great suggestions on how to take pictures of the images inside of a Kaleidoscope. Which was very helpful in the understanding that my idea was possible, before investing too much in it.
